Eco-friendly vehicles can be divided into two categories: electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles. In view of each category, automobile manufacturers have filed an annual average of 263 patent applications for electric vehicle batteries and 180 patent applications for hydrogen vehicle fuel cells since 2010. Korean automobile manufacturers filed more applications for hydrogen vehicle fuel cells, which accounted for 56.8% of the entire number of applications filed. On the other hand, foreign automobile manufacturers filed more applications for electric vehicle batteries, which accounted for 80.4% of the entire number of applications filed. This difference between Korean and foreign automobile manufacturers could be the result of the direction of approach for future eco-friendly vehicles.
